When we think of Wee Nam Kee, what always comes to mind is their famous Hainanese Chicken.
But there’s more to Wee Nam Kee than just chicken. Last week, we were invited to preview Wee Nam Kee’s new menu:
Family Platter (P888) – I liked the Roasted Hainanese Chicken and the Lechon Macau (Roast Pork) in this platter ๐ The jellyfish needs some work though.
Claypot Chicken Noodles (P320) – in Chinese home cooking, chicken and mushrooms with ginger have been a favorite combo with rice for a long time. Here, instead of rice, Wee Nam Kee pairs it with egg noodles. Also, it wasn’t served in a clay pot as I had expected. I really liked the delicious, thin egg noodles they use here – they soak up the sauce really well, and it’s not as bland as rice. Out of all the dishes we tried, for me, this was the best one, although I think this will only appeal to those who like the flavors of Chinese home cooking or Chinese street food. In our table, there were only 2 of us who really appreciated this dish.
Grilled US Flat Iron Steak in Sweet Soy Sauce (P590) – this is similar to the Chinese-style sizzling steak we usually order at Chinese banquets, and was a favorite at our table. I have no complaints about the tenderness or quality of the beef, and the sauce is exactly what it says – a sweet, soy sauce based sauce that wasn’t too salty – it’s a flavor that I think will be a hit with most people ๐
Salt and Pepper Shrimp (P425)
Pineapple Fried Rice with Chinese Chorizo (P295) – pineapple and Chinese chorizo in a fried rice is actually a delicious combination ๐ the bits of pineapples add bursts of sweetness to the aromatic fried rice. It was also a hit at our table.
Milk Tea (P150) – Wee Nam Kee came out with their own milk tea, and the milk tea was creamier than I had expected ๐
SUMMARY
I liked the Pineapple Fried Rice with Chinese Chorizo and the Claypot Chicken Noodles. The Chinese-style sizzling steak (Grilled US Flat Iron Steak in Sweet Soy Sauce) is also something I will definitely reorder when I return ๐
While Hainanese Chicken Rice is still what Wee Nam Kee is famous for, give Wee Nam Kee’s other offerings a try. Who knows, you might find something else you love at Wee Nam Kee ๐
