Last week, a friend of mine invited us to try out Teddy’s Bigger Burgers in Greenbelt. We were planning to go malling there so we thought we’d check it out.
Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is a franchise from Hawaii, and the Hawaiian theme is very evident as soon as you see the place. It is located on the third floor of Greenbelt 3. The interiors are decorated in such a way that if I didn’t look outside the window and see the rest of Greenbelt, I could easily pretend that I was on some tiki bar in Hawaii.
Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is a chain of casual burger restaurants in Hawaii that was started by backyard cookouts of owners Ted & Rich. The branch in Greenbelt opened in 2014, but has just recently transformed itself into a Tiki Bar aside from just being a burger joint.
THE FOOD
We had some Spam Fries (P268). It’s french fries and Spam fried like french fries, and is served on a Spam tin, with 3 kinds of dip – honey mustard, chili mayo and catsup. This order was already half-eaten before I was able to take a pic:
We ordered one Bacon Me Crazy (P427 for the 6 oz. ). The bun is a potato bun, the potatoes make the bun fluffier. The burger is made from ground chuck, and they actually call it a steak burger because of that. This makes the beef patty taste really beefy.
I enjoyed the burger, but I think the price of P427 is a bit on the high side. Burger snobs might not like it that much – I mean, I liked the burger well enough, but it’s not a gourmet burger. It’s a backyard burger, very casual, like something you’d enjoy at a friend’s backyard party. That doesn’t mean that it’s bad, I don’t think it is. It’s just a fun and casual burger, which I also found delicious. What’s different though, is that the beef patty tastes beefier than regular beef patties. I also liked the combination of flavors of the sauces/condiments in the burger – it’s very Hawaiian – with some sweet and some tang.
We also ordered the Salmon Poke Bowl (P338). It had brown rice, zucchini, raw salmon cubes, onions, and a mayo dressing. This was okay, but I was expecting the flavors to be more robust – more sweet, more tart, more contrasting flavors and textures.
For dessert, we had the Mallow Lava (P298), which is basically S’mores – graham crackers, peanut butter, melty marshmallows, a scoop of vanilla ice cream on a hot plate, and drizzled with chocolate sauce. It’s sweet and I liked it, but I couldn’t finish it all by myself because it was really sweet. It’s best shared with several sweet-toothed people.
For drinks we had these tiki drinks. They have a promo where each glass is only P99. I had the Rose ala Moana because I love Moana (it’s time to sing How Far I’ll Go 😀 )! It’s a rose-flavored drink with some alcohol. J had the Haleiwa Fresh which is mango-flavored. They are light drinks. I get the Asian flush very easily even with just a glass of wine, but I drank almost 2 glasses and I just felt a slight buzz – no headache, no quick heartbeat, no red face.
SUMMARY
I enjoyed the ambience of Teddy’s Bigger Burgers. It’s different, and as long as I don’t look outside, I can forget that I’m in Greenbelt. That day, they had Lilo & Stitch and The Rock’s Tooth Fairy playing on the big TVs for a more Polynesian feel. It’s casual and a nice place to relax and hang back. I don’t know, I just find the vibe there very de-stressing. 🙂
As for the food, the burgers are good but not fancy, and overall, I expected more bold flavors from a Hawaiian place. I would recommend this place to hang out in if you want to forget that you’re in the middle of a concrete jungle.
