Some Thai Exterior

We had dinner at Some Thai last weekend and everything was delicious!

In fact, in terms of flavor, we like the food at Some Thai much better compared to our visit to Benjarong a few months ago (when there was a credit card promo for Dusit).

Some Thai

Some Thai opened earlier this year.

It is along Tomas Morato in QC, beside Krispy Kreme. The restaurant doesn’t have its own parking spot. You’re on your own looking for parking, but you might get lucky and find a spot in front. There are some entrepreneurial, informal “parking people (bantay)” in the area who can help you.

The restaurant itself is quite small. With all the hype I heard about the place, I expected a bigger restaurant, but it’s actually small. I don’t recommend going there as a big group. Best if 2-5 pax.

The vibe is casual.

Some Thai Table
Table setting

Good thing we went early, before 6pm, and we were already second on the waiting list! By the time we left, there was already a long line outside the restaurant. Blockbuster!

Remember what I said about the restaurant being small? While we were waiting, we heard them request some customers to move to another table, so the restaurant could push some tables together to accommodate a larger group.

And then by the time we were seated at our own table, after we made our orders, but before the food arrived, one of the staff requested us to move to another table, saying it was okay if we didn’t want to. This was because a group of 9 pax came in, and our table was in between the free tables. Table for 4 on our left, table for 2 on our right. Our table for 2 was in the middle.

But I liked our original table because the lighting was good! We already declined the first time. And then when the customers arrived, the customers themselves asked us again to move.

We moved just to avoid causing a scene, and to avoid being caught in between two tables who know each other and who looked like they were determined to talk across our table. Look, I myself wouldn’t even consider asking other people to move. Even on planes when we were given non-adjoining seats (there was someone else between us), I am not that thick-skinned to ask people to move, and we try to bother them as little as possible and even avoid talking over them.

What are your opinions on asking other customers (who are already seated) to move tables to accommodate your party? It’s because Some Thai only accepts walk-ins, no reservations. I still think customers should wait until tables open up to accommodate their entire party and have the decency to not basically coerce other customers to move tables to accommodate them.

This kind of thing happened again, I think, I overheard the staff again asking other customers to move. Talk about customer Tetris!

The Food

Well, it’s a good thing that the food was actually delicious!

For appetizers, we ordered the Pomelo Salad (P350) and the Spicy Beef Salad (P490).

Some Thai Pomelo Salad
Pomelo Salad

The Pomelo Salad was citrusy and sweet with a hint of coconut cream, it had lots of pomelo, cherry tomatoes, thinly-sliced baby sigarilyas (winged beans), fried shallots, and a small amount of cilantro. Sliced chilis on the side, so you can add as much or as little as you want.

The Spicy Beef Salad was on the saltier side, also citrusy, with crunchy cucumber, tomato wedges, thinly sliced shallots, crispy-fried eggplant slices, lots of cilantro, topped with (after some research) ground toasted rice, probably.

Both salads were bold and flavorful. No one is playing safe with the flavors here! Flavors were strong but balanced and not overpowering. I recommend them based on the taste. Nothing was bland.

However, we had an issue with the Spicy Beef Salad. No problem with the flavor. But, the beef slices were so tough! They looked to be cooked medium but I tell you, the struggle was real to eat them.

Then I took a closer look (because the lighting on our new table was not good), I realized the beef was sliced with the grain. It is supposed to be sliced against the grain. That’s why the beef was so tough to chew.

To be fair, they were very generous with the beef slices. Unfortunately, the beef was tough.

We also ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai (for sharing, P650, good for 2). Bean sprouts, peanuts, chilis, lime on the side. This is one of the better-flavored pad thais I’ve had in recent memory. Sweet & savory, didn’t scrimp on the sauce, strong flavors but not too salty. Perfect, just a tad bit strong (fine by me), but absolutely delicious! Noodles are soft yet chewy and don’t fall apart.

For the main dish, we ordered the 48-hour Beef Short Rib Curry (P980) and a cup of Steamed Pandan Rice (P60) we just shared. At first, I was worried that they would use the same tough beef as the Spicy Beef Salad, but fortunately, this beef was really, fall-apart tender. It’s so soft, you hardly have to chew. I can taste the beef fat that has melted into the meat. It’s amazing.

The curry sauce was also very flavorful. It tastes like a typical Thai beef curry sauce, but creamy, and heavy on the kaffir.

Everything we ordered was delicious!

Summary

The whole meal cost around P3,000 for 2 people. More expensive than usual.

The servings were small for the price, but the food was really delicious.

Aegyo Cafe

I had been itching to go try Aegyo Cafe since September, so we finally had dessert there after Some Thai.

Aegyo Cafe is very aesthetic, and the outside is so pretty and looks so Korean. The cafe is spacious (probably 3x bigger than Some Thai). The small cake shop is in front, there’s an adjoining door between the cake shop and the cafe.

When I was there, there was almost nothing on display at the cake shop. I ordered the last slice of Strawberry Biscoff something cake (P200). It’s delicious, light & fluffy, not too sweet. You can ask them to serve the cake at the cafe.

We also ordered an Edamame (P200).

For drinks, I went with their popular Black Sesame Latte (P200). I liked it and wouldn’t mind drinking it again. I can taste the black sesame but it’s light, it just add a creamy flavor to the coffee. I actually didn’t taste much of the coffee. I asked for some sugar, but they didn’t have any. They can only provide Splenda, or sugar syrup (they charge for sugar syrup), so I just went with 2 packs of Splenda. Please provide sugar in the future.

Sis ordered the Yuzu Butterfly Pea Lemonade (P200). Since she’s been minimizing eating sweets, she found this too sweet and ended up taking it home to add more water to. There’s a charge of P5.00 for the takeout cup. The takeout cup is quite nice, though, thick and not flimsy.

For payment, they only accept cash or GCash. There’s a 10% service charge, so everything was P885.
