A couple of weeks ago, I received a waterproof Lash Sensational mascara from Maybelline Philippines.
Since I was going on a trip, it was the only mascara I took with me so that I can review it for you after a week of use.
MAYBELLINE LASH SENSATIONAL MASCARA (WATERPROOF)
Claims: Lengthens and separates lashes to create instant volume. Zero mess, zero clumps!
The Lash Sensational Mascara is a waterproof mascara equipped with a special Lash Catcher wand that captures all your lashes from corner to corner! The shorter bristles on one side allow you to go really close to your lash line, while the longer bristles fan out all your lashes, giving you more sensational volume with zero mess, zero clumps.

It has the soft rubber spiky things, and is not a spoolie-type wand.
Love:
- The wand. I am totally loving the Lash Sensational wand. It really fans the lashes out. My lashes look separated and fanned out – unless you really pile on the coats, this mascara will not clump.
- Natural look. My lashes look natural, but emphasized. This is not a volumizing nor lengthening mascara, it just gives natural looking lashes that are fanned out and more visible.
- Does not clump. Never had any problem at all about the mascara clumping.
Did not love:
- Smudging / Flaking. I am so sad that this mascara smudges on me. I don’t know why. I think maybe it’s my eye shape and my oily lids, but the waterproof Maybelline Hypercurl does not smudge on me, not even if I cry at the movies. As I’m writing this, I am wearing the Hypercurl in Manila summer (no aircon the whole day) – it’s been 8 hours and it still has not smudged, not even a little. Every time I use the Lash Sensational, it smudges on me after a few hours. It’s nothing that can’t be easily fixed with a swipe from a cotton bud, but it means I have to constantly check if the mascara has smudged.
The smudging occurs both above my eye (hooded lid) and in my undereye. It got to a point where it became a habit for me to check if the mascara has smudged every time I went to the rest room.
Since I wanted a little more volume, I usually did 2 coats – it smudged after a few hours. I always curl my lashes before applying mascara. Since I was travelling, I didn’t do any eye makeup – no eyeshadow, no eyeliner, nothing except this mascara. That’s how I am sure that all the smudging was due to the mascara.
So I tried doing just 1 coat, it still smudged, but not as bad. One day I tried doing a thicker coat (3x), and by evening, it was flaking.
I think it has to do with the formula itself – because it is not volumizing my lashes and is a bit thin, I tend to swipe more to get more of the mascara on my lashes. The thicker the mascara, the higher the tendency to smudge and flake.
BEFORE
Here’s how it looks like just applied – I do like the effect it has on my lashes. You have to let them dry for a few seconds before closing your eyes first – I learned this the hard way, I got those 2 tiny dots of black under my eye.
AFTER
Here’s how it looks like after 10 hours of walking and eating around Hong Kong. I took a pic of the other eye, where the smudging was worse.
This day was just jam-packed – we went to a temple and went to 3 other areas. Lots of walking. On other days with minimal walking, the mascara still smudged a little, but not as badly as this.
Other people who have reviewed this say that this mascara does not smudge at all. I don’t know if it’s just because of my oily lids or eye shape that’s why it smudges on me.
SUMMARY
My final thoughts on the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara:
The Maybelline Lash Sensational seems to work for so many people, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to work for my lashes and my eyelids. If you have naturally long and thick lashes and non-oily lids, maybe this will work better for you.
For this mascara, it’s best to only put a light coat. I also suggest bringing extra cotton buds or something that you can use to wipe away any flakes or smudges.
I really do love the wand, I like the fan effect it gives. I am thinking that once I use up the Lash Sensational, I’m going to clean the wand and put it in my Hypercurl mascara. It looks like it’s the same size thread and it looks like it is going to fit in the Hypercurl mascara body. I wonder if it will give the same fan effect 🙂
The mascara is easy to remove – micellar water works just fine.
