Liter of Light Xmas

There’s a new light display at the Luneta!

Last Monday, Bonifacio Day, a giant light display of the Philippine flag was lit on the historic grounds of Rizal Park.

3,000 solar lights were lit as a tribute to the heroism of Filipino frontliners. The lights were individually assembled by volunteers from all over the country who have united for the project. “This is our tribute to heroism on a global scale, a tribute to all the Filipino frontliners worldwide who have fought to contain the pandemic. It is a profound expression of solidarity with those who have risked life and limb to be in the frontlines of the fight,” said Illac Diaz, Founder of Liter of Light and organizer of the event.

Founded in the Philippines, Liter of Light is a global grassroots movement committed to providing affordable, sustainable, solar lights to people with limited or no access to electricity. As the first global Filipino NGO, Liter of Light has brought light to millions of people in off-grid areas across the globe.

Diaz has been selected as the Philippines’ private sector representative to Expo 2020 Dubai as part of its EXPOLIVE Impact Innovation Program showcasing the work of innovators of global importance.  Liter of Light’s grassroots platform operates hubs in 32 countries, and has positively impacted the lives of over 1.5 million individuals globally.

I was invited to witness the lighting. Safety precautions were taken by the organizers. Luneta is such a pretty spot for a picture! I am happy to see that it is clean and well-kept.

According to Diaz, this is a good opportunity for the Philippines to be on the spotlight for positive reasons. The country is always in the news because of typhoons and other calamities, and receiving aid for them, but this project aims to show the Philippines giving to the world. During this pandemic, the heroism of Filipino frontliners everywhere in the world who continue to do their jobs and contribute to the care of those hit by the virus cannot be disputed.

The lights are currently arranged to form the Philippine flag, and will be up until Saturday.

Afterwards, the solar lights will be donated to those affected by the recent typhoons (Rolly and Ulysses), with the help of partner airline, Air Asia Philippines.

This project was spearheaded by Illac Diaz of Liter of Light together with various sponsors. Dingdong Dantes was also present because his organization is one of the sponsors, as well.

Rizal Park was clean and the lights were pretty! The light show makes it feel like you’re abroad ? Yup, it’s been years since I’ve strolled around Luneta.

If you miss travelling, why not check out Luneta Park? At least you don’t need to go through any quarantine protocols if you’re from Metro Manila. Just take proper precautions and keep safe. There aren’t too many people so it’s easy to social distance.
