They say love conquers all.
Love will find a way.
But a lot of people still feel that they can’t be free to be with the one they love because of shame and discrimination when pursuing unconventional relationships. There is still a lot of fear holding people back from coming out.
The perceived problems could be because of age gaps, same-sex relationships, cultural differences, the stigma around online dating, etc… but what really matters is how you connect with each other. The relationship is between the both of you, and how you two feel about each other and how you both adapt to circumstances surrounding your relationship is really all that matters.
#LoveRules
Last week, Closeup held a #LoveRules Exhibit and a panel discussion about this topic at the BGC Arts Center.
Showcased were murals by graffiti artist Jappy Agoncillo, each highlighting a perceived barrier to relationships and celebrating how Filipino couples overcome these differences.
The panel discussion facilitated by Vicky Herrera consisted of these courageous individuals who shared their own stories of finding love:
- mother of two, Andi Eigenmann
- actress and entrepreneur Issa Pressman
- Indoor cycling instructor EG Bautista
- Radio DJ and host Katz Salao
Actress Andi Eigenmann opened up about her relationship with surfing champion Philmar Alipayo. Everyone said they were not in the same league, but she never connected with any of the guys people thought she was “bagay” with. It was Philmar with whom she truly connected.

She shared that so many people told her that they were not “bagay,” especially with an Eigenmann like her. But she didn’t let those things get to her. She knew what she wanted. So she packed her bags and moved to Siargao to be with him. She said that the other things didn’t matter. She just travels to Manila when she needs to for work.
They recently welcomed a baby girl, and they have a happy, wonderful life – a life that she wouldn’t have had if she had listened to all the naysayers.
Here’s proof that if something is worth fighting for, then you should fight for it 🙂
The other panelists also shared their own stories of finding the freedom to love, overcoming fear and judgement.
These stories are encouraging to everyone who is experiencing similar struggles. Don’t be afraid to love because you might miss out on something beautiful and end up regretting what could have been. We should also support everyone and give them the freedom to love who they want to.
By highlighting these heartwarming stories of how people choose love, Closeup empowers everyone to get closer to each other, creating a more accepting and respectful world.
