A few weeks ago, we tried out this new restaurant on the fourth floor of Century City Mall called Chaplin.
It is a new restaurant that just opened on February, 2016, and by the looks of it, it’s a place I think I will enjoy hanging out in during the day. Their tag line is Take Your Time, and Chaplin is successful in making me feel the “take your time” vibe!
A PLACE YOU’LL WANT TO STAY IN
Okay, so a quick intro about Chaplin – it looks like a nice brunch place during the day where you can chill and hang out, drink coffee, eat good food, and work on your computer – they have electricity outlets available literally every few feet. This is the first place, outside of a Starbucks, where I have seen this integrated into a restaurant’s design this much. I really appreciate how Chaplin took its customer’s electricity needs into account!
I love the colors they used for the interiors – a light teal, black and white. I even love their floor tiles! The design is clean, classy, natural, light, but has a subtle quirkiness. This is the vibe I want my dream house to feel like!
I can tell, this is going to be one of my favorite restaurants to stay in!
At night, I was told it becomes a drinking hub where patrons can enjoy shots of liquor. Actually, they have a Happy Hour which apparently starts any time, LOL. During my visit, they had a promo for Buy 1 Take 1 on San Mig Draft, and a free shot of Jameson Whiskey with every Stella Artois and Hoegaarden Draft.
THE FOOD
Chef Myke del Rosario heads the kitchen. Chaplin’s food is Middle-Eastern, Mediterranean and Intercontinental. The owner is Israeli, that’s why the menu leans towards Middle-Eastern cuisine.
Basically, the food is simple, delicious, and healthy without going overboard. They have vegan dishes, too, if that’s how you roll.
Chaplin has an all-day breakfast menu!
Eggs Benedict on Waffles (P335) – perfectly runny egg yolks, Canadian bacon, Hollandaise sauce on waffles
Eggplant Melanzane (P265 – Vegan) – this is one of the Vegan items on the menu – strips of grilled eggplant encase a filling of onions, tomatoes, and mild peppers. Perfect for when all you want is a light meal. I would order this even if I wasn’t Vegan, LOL.
Bourekas (P240) – this was my favorite dish of the meal! It’s such a simple thing – flaky croissant, ripe tomatoes, perfectly boiled eggs, pesto… but it works! I find it very comforting. This is the dish I am ordering when I go back to Chaplin!
Shakshouka with Black Olives, Eggplant & Feta (P365) – I’m glad we’re starting to see more shaksouka being offered in Manila. It is a lovely Mediterranean / North African breakfast staple of tomatoes, onions, peppers, and poached eggs. It’s like beef chili without the beans or the beef. This one has eggplants and feta cheese, and is served on a cast iron pan with bread on the side.
Chaplin Burger (P425) – Chaplin’s signature burger is stopped with mushrooms and caramelized onions. The beef patty is soft & juicy.
Chaplin Steak (P675) – this tenderloin steak was delicious! The beef was perfectly cooked. I was very happy with it – it was nicely seasoned, tender, and had no litid.
Chicken Steak (P345) – this was a bit like a boneless chicken barbecue a good choice for kids or less adventurous diners
For dessert, we had:
Three Chocolate Mousse (P225)
Chocolate Souffle with Ice Cream (P240)
Crumble Cheesecake (P220)
All the desserts we tried were delicious! No complaints at all! The chocolate souffle was very chocolate-y, and I couldn’t get enough of the Crumble Cheesecake!
They have coffee and tea, too:
SUMMARY
Next time you’re stuck in Makati and want to pass the time relaxing, or if you just need a quiet place to work out of with a nice ambience and good food, check out Chaplin!
I love the calming but still upbeat decor, and I really appreciate the electricity sockets they’ve put everywhere. The food is also delicious, with some healthy and vegan options, too.
