It’s been a while since I’ve dined at Causeway, years, probably. There was a time when it was the only place for a Chinese-style lauriat family get together in the Banawe area.
Then there was that time when we kept going back there for congee breakfast on Sundays. But the restaurant had started to show its age, and parking tended to be a bit of a problem. While the restaurant had parking space in front, it was limited and always full during peak hours.
There are actually 2 Causeway Seafood Restaurants along Banawe, near Del Monte. Causeway 1, or the main restaurant, is the one in the corner, and Causeway 2 is a smaller branch.
Go to the bigger Causeway when you want to eat lauriat-style, and go to Causeway 2 if you want to eat dimsum and not full set lauriat type of meals.
CAUSEWAY SEAFOOD RESTAURANT
Anyway, I recently had the chance to revisit Causeway when some foodie friends invited me to have dinner with them. I was happy to see that Causeway had undergone some renovations.
THE FOOD
Here are the dishes that we had:
My favorite was this Assorted Seafood with Cheese in Pumpkin Bowl (P960). It’s creamy, not too cheesy, and good for your eyes, too! The pumpkin flavor isn’t really that strong, but I like pumpkin. If you’re tired of the usual dishes you order, give this one a try. I would consider this senior-friendly, if you are planning to bring grandma or grandpa. It’s generally soft and easy to chew, but not like it’s overcooked or anything. It’s pretty good! 🙂
Assorted Seafood Rice Soup (P1,400): This one was cooked table-side. Creamy, comforting and also delicious, but if I had to pick one, I would pick the Assorted Seafood with Cheese in Pumpkin Bowl! I would also consider this senior-friendly.
Diced Beef Cubes with Potato (P800): There’s diced beef, and there are some fried potatoes. That’s it. Not bad but nothing really special.
Baked Prawn Thailand Style (P1,920): The prawns are big, the sauce is similar to a Thai curry sauce, but Chinese-ified 😛
Shredded Chicken with Fresh Fruit Salad (P700): They really did not scrimp on the chicken! You get A LOT of chicken in this dish. It’s a chicken salad that actually pairs well with the fruits! It is very similar to the filling of a chicken sandwich, except this has A LOT of chicken and no extenders! I love chicken sandwich and I really wanted to put the chicken salad in some bread!
Lo-Han Vegetable with Wintermelon (P720): Delicate and sweet. Wintermelon cooked like this is a treat! People who may not be used to dishes like this might find it bland, but I loved it! The wintermelon is soft but not mushy, the whole dish is perfumed with the aromas of mushrooms and vegetables.
Assorted Vegetables and Mushrooms with Beancurd Wrapper (P420): Vegetables and mushroom. Nice and light.
Lapu-Lapu with Abalone Sauce (P1,700): The lapu-lapu has been filleted and the meat ready to eat in bite-sized pieces. A good choice for those who hate having to pick out fish bones.
Mushroom Pao (P85): I can’t get over how much those mushroom paos look like real mushrooms! They are siopao bread shaped like mushrooms, filled with a pork & mushroom filling, and decorated with cocoa powder to make them look like mushrooms!
Egg Yolk Pao (P85): No Chinese lauriat meal, or even a dimsum meal, is complete nowadays without Egg Yolk Pao! These buns are filled with a creamy, sweet and salty salted egg yolk filling.

SUMMARY
Causeway Seafood Restaurant is an old classic in Banawe. However, it’s nice to see that they are keeping up with the times and renovated the place. For me, I would still order some of the lauriat classics that we usually get when we go to a Chinese restaurant like Causeway, like Chinese-style Sizzling Beef, Yang Chow Fried Rice, Hot Salad, Shrimp Mango Salad Roll, being some of my favorites.
However, looking at Causeway’s menu, I saw a lot of innovation – there are many new dishes, not just the same-old, same-old stuff that we’ve been ordering since forever. I have even found a new favorite in the Assorted Seafood with Cheese in Pumpkin Bowl! You should definitely try it, it might be your new favorite, too.
Also, wasn’t the Mushroom Pao really inspired? I thought that was so creative. I never would have expected it from a Chinese restaurant. I feel like it belongs in a TV cooking show contest.
And if you’re not that hung up about time and can wait a few hours before eating, you can also take advantage of their 30% OFF promo from 9:30 PM – 12 Midnight so you can enjoy more food for less!
