A few Saturdays ago, Big D’s Smokehouse officially had the grand opening of their Venice Grand Canal Mall branch. This is their third branch – they also have branches in Tomas Morato and in Eastwood.
This Big D’s Smokehouse is located on the second floor of the Venice Grand Canal Mall, and it specializes in barbecues and smoked meats.
Interiors are clean and cozy, with warm wood colors and brick detailing to evoke that rustic, barbecue / smokehouse feel:
Elvis is even in the house!
THE FOOD
For starters, we were able to try the Start Up Nachos (P175 for duo, P310 for platter size). The chips were light and crispy, and topped with some pulled pork, salsa, and cheese sauce. I liked the light chips much better than the heavier corn tortilla chips that other places use. I couldn’t stop nibbling on these!
We got to try the Stage 1 Ribs Solo (P260) which is a Southern-style classic barbecue. It is cooked until even the bones are so soft that you can break them with your utensils. I found the ribs too tender for my liking – they literally fall apart. Flavor-wise, the ribs are flavored heavily with thyme. I myself love thyme, and I found the thyme too overpowering.
We were also able to get a bite of this Smoked Beef Brisket (P470), which I think is the better dish to order than the ribs. It is slow-smoked over 12 hours over hardwood and coals, and I really liked this so much better than the ribs. I like that this brisket is lean and not very fatty, but still tender.
